In 1684, Evgueni Romanov (Евге́ний Алексеевич Романов), brother of the tsar Peter the Great secretly negotiated with Zadek ibn Farouk, great black slaves trader based in Guinea, a "cargo" of 25,000 slaves to serve his house and lands.

Evgueni Alexeievitch, who had the deserved reputation of being an eccentric person, decided to replace all his serfs and servants with Africans. A year later the slaves arrived by the Baltic sea and were settled in Kazan, 500 km from Moscow where Evgueni and his retinue lived.

The problems began : after 3 years, Evgueni drove all the African slaves out of Kazan, and after a long wandering, they settled in Ukraine, the Urals and the Balkans, and founded colonies that have now completely disappeared, decimated by the epidemics and famines during the 19th century.

What "The Black Slavics" presents are the songs of these Africans and their descendants settled in Russia. The laws of the Tsar forbade them to sing in their own language and to sing sing their own religious music which seemed too rhythmic for the Orthodox Church’s liking.

"The Black Slavics" adapted the Russian songs to their own style and and it is the long transformation of these traditional Russian songs into African songs that you will hear, taken from oblivion thanks to the Azeri musicologist Kajnun Marimov.

« Music-Fiction »
The songs of the Black Slavics are at the heart of the concept of "Music-Fiction" invented by Thierry Van Roy : re-writing history and, and thus creating music that could have existed if history had decided it.
This new form of musical creation is practically limitless: by modifying in history one or more elements of the past, present or future, one can imagine changing the face of the world and subsequently that of music, the latter always being the result of the reciprocal influences of cultures, according to the transformations of the history of civilizations.
Unlike world music in the general sense, where cultures from different geographical areas meet, "music fiction" also plays on the notion of time and history: The Black Slavics music was born from the meeting of African culture and Slavic culture, but in seventeenth-century Russia. Perhaps the history of the Black Slavics would have really taken place if Christopher Columbus and his caravels had sunk off the coast of Portugal and left the Americas "terra incognita".



The Choir
“The Black Slavics” project is interpreted by the choir “Les Anges Compagnie” (L.A.Cie).
The singers are : Ange Nawasadio – artistic director (Congo-Kin.), Gyle Waddy (Usa), Sylvie Nawasadio (Congo-Kin.), Alexia Waku (Congo-Kin.), Guy Waku (Congo-Kin.), Marie-Ange Teeuwen (Burundi), Dju BB' ( Congo-Kin.), Epolo (Congo-Kin.), Jojotte (Congo Brazza) , Lionel Sonna (Cameroun), William Wright (USA) and Borys Cholewka (Ukraine) as choir director.
All the songs of the “Black Slavics” project have been selected by Borys Cholewka who was leading the choir as a special guest.

In the majority of the songs, the first part presents the traditional version in polyphony and in the original language (Russian, Croatian, Ukrainian, Bulgarian, Hungarian); the second part of the song shows its imaginary evolution through the Africans of Russia, in one of the most widespread languages of Central Africa, Lingala.

The African interpretations of these Slavic songs are all improvised.

Personnage excentrique, Evgueni Alexeievitch avait décidé de remplacer tous ses serfs et serviteurs par des Africains. Une année plus tard, les esclaves arrivèrent par la mer Baltique et furent installés à Kazan, à 500 km de Moscou, ou résidaient Evgueni et sa suite. Mais les problèmes allaient surgir assez vite et, après trois années, Evgueni chassa tous les Africains hors de Kazan; après une longue errance, ceux-ci s'établirent en Ukraine, dans l'Oural et dans les Balkans, et fondèrent des colonies qui ont actuellement entièrement disparu, décimées par les épidémies et les famines du XIX° Siècle.

Ce que "The Black Slavics" présente, ce sont les chants de ces Africains et leurs descendants installés en Russie. Les lois du Tsar leur interdisaient de chanter dans leur langue et de chanter leur propre musique religieuse qui paraissait trop rythmée au goût des popes. Les "Slaves Noirs" ont adapté les chants russes à leur manière, et c'est le longue transformation de ces chants russes traditionnels en chants africains que vous allez entendre, tirés de l'oubli grâce au musicologue azéri Kajnun Marimov.

"Musique-fiction"
Les chants des Black Slavics sont au cœur du concept de "Musique-Fiction" que je développe : réécrire l'histoire, et donc créer une musique qui aurait pu exister si l'histoire l'avait décidé, mais qui n'existe pas réellement…
Cette nouvelle forme de création musicale est pratiquement sans limites : en modifiant dans l’histoire un ou plusieurs éléments du passé, du présent ou du futur, on peut imaginer changer la face du monde et subséquemment celle de la musique, cette dernière étant toujours la résultante des influences réciproques des cultures, au gré des transformations de l’histoire des civilisations.
A la différence de la World music au sens général, où se rencontrent des cultures d’espaces géographiques différents, la » music fiction » joue aussi sur la notion de temps et d’histoire : The Black Slavics music naît de la rencontre de la culture africaine et de la culture slave, mais dans la russie du XVII siècle. Peut être l’histoire des Black Slavics aurait vraiment eu lieu si Christophe Colomb et ses caravelles avait coulé au large du Portugal et laissé les Amériques « terra incognita ».

Le projet"The Black Slavics"
Dans la majorité des chants, la première partie présente la version traditionnelle en polyphonie et dans la langue originale (russe, croate, ukrainien, bulgare, hongrois; la deuxième partie du chant montre son évolution imaginaire à travers les Africains de Russie, dans une des langues les plus répandues d’Afrique centrale, le Lingala .

Les interprétations africaines des ces chants slaves sont toutes improvisées.

Le projet « The Black Slavics » est interprété par le Choeur “Les Anges Compagnie” (L.A. Cie). Les chants ont été choisis par Borys Cholewka, qui dirige ici les chœurs dans le cadre du projet Black Slavics en tant qu’invité .

Le chœur «Les Anges Compagnie” (L.A. Cie) est composé de Ange Nawasadio - directeur artistique titulaire (Congo-Kin), Gyle Waddy (Usa) – chef de chœur titulaire, Sylvie Nawasadio (Congo-Kin), Alexia Waku (Congo-Kin), Guy Waku (Congo-Kin), Marie-Ange Teeuwen (Burundi), Dju BB' ( Congo-Kin), Epolo (Congo-Kin), Jojotte (Congo Brazza) , Lionel Sonna (Cameroun), William Wright (USA).

"The Black Slavics" a été enregistré en octobre et novembre 1999 en l'Eglise Ste Aldegonde à Ecaussinnes (Belgique), excepté "Ochti Sierdsié" et "Zeleneye" en l'église du Couvent des Dominicains à Bruxelles.
